Download All PlansBuilding birdhouses is the perfect weekend woodworking project. They require minimal materials, basic tools, and can be completed in just a few hours. Birdhouses also make excellent handmade gifts and can be sold at craft fairs and garden centres.

Different birds need different birdhouses. Blue tits and great tits prefer 25-28mm entrance holes mounted 2-4 metres high. Robins prefer open-fronted boxes placed in vegetation. Sparrows nest colonially in terraced boxes. House martins need special cup-shaped boxes under eaves.
The best wood for birdhouses is cedar or untreated pine, approximately 15-20mm thick. This provides adequate insulation while keeping the box lightweight enough to mount. Never use pressure-treated wood inside birdhouses, as the chemicals can harm birds.
Bird feeders complement birdhouses by attracting birds to your garden year-round. Hopper feeders, tube feeders, and suet feeders each attract different species. Our plans include designs that are easy to clean and refill, with proper drainage to keep seed dry.
25mm for blue tits and coal tits, 28mm for great tits, 32mm for house sparrows and nuthatches, 45mm for starlings. Open-fronted boxes with 100mm openings suit robins and wrens.
Mount 2-4 metres high on a tree, wall, or post. Face the entrance away from prevailing winds (usually between north and east in the UK). Tilt the box slightly forward to keep rain out. Avoid busy areas with heavy foot traffic.
Clean annually in autumn after the breeding season ends. Remove old nesting material, wash with boiling water, and check for damage. Never use chemicals or insecticides inside birdhouses.
